Manimal transformation
Do you remember the TV show Manimal ? It was around 1983. The main character had the ability to transform into different kind of animals.
Let’s watch again the full panther transformation.
I liked this show, that was cool, and for a TV show, effects wasn’t bad !

I even find that even ’till a good time in the 00′s effects in TV shows where a whole lot worse than this. I saw big budget movies of the 80′s that had effects that weren’t really that much better than this, and then came CGI which ruined television and low budget effects (In my opinion). a cheap animatronic or make-up effect at least looked remotely real, whilst cheap and badly composited CGI always looks fake and ruins a lot of series with good atmosphere.
But than again, that’s my opinion (and I know CGI is speedier and cheaper to make, so I do understand TV networks:)).

Yes, that’s a big debate, CGI vs SFX…Take a film like Hellboy 2. There are a lot of Make-up effects and some CGI. You can not always tell wich one is CG and wich one is real.

Oh, but I ain’t talking about movies with a large budget. I’m all for CGI efects (otherwise I wouldn’t go and study it next year) but I really mean the previous generation of TV series (Fringe and a lot of new series do have a certain level of animation and CGI in them) and low budget movies (one of the first things that comes to mind is Cyclopse (2008) (http://hl.megashares.com/1608pt36fde4c.png) or some monster effects in the movie Blood: The Last vampire.
I truly love movies like Hellboy etc. Del Torro is a master in finding the right balance between prosthetics, animatronics and CGI.
